Most of my political life, I have been an Independent, more often than not, successful at appreciating all points of view and choosing the candidate over the “Party.” I’m also old enough, not only to remember, but appreciate and respect Republicans like Everett Dirksen and Governor Nelson Rockefeller, and even Goldwater. However, living through the slow undoing of our National human decency and International respectability during the “Dark Ages” of the Bush/Cheney/Rice/Rumsfeld/ Gonzales/Rove administration, it became increasingly difficult to understand how we as a people could settle for such a low self-image of ourselves. I know we have never been the perfect people our movies and even history books portray, but surely we know when we’re being Nationally and Internationally redefined in a most disappointing way. Now, I don’t claim to be a scholar but I certainly don’t rely on Google or on either our mainstream or “new media” as my only resource/research for information and perspective, so I know when I’m being manipulated and I have to believe that those ever increasing “talking heads” with their ever narrowing self-serving talking points, know as well. No matter who you voted for in 2000, 2004, 2006, or 2008, who you vote for in 2010 is going to say who we are. As my European friends told me, “once could have been your Supreme Court, but twice, that was you.” So please let us take off our “Love it or Leave it” blinders or “rosy colored glasses” and see the world as the world sees us. Black, white, rich, poor, Conservative, Liberal, young, old, poor, middle class and even some rich (though not so much), we have been used, and if we continue to let Conservative spin scare us into irrational choices, we will never regain our common sense. Surely we can recognize when a hypocrite accuses us of being unpatriotic if we don’t shoot first and ask questions later. Surely we have not been blindsided so long that a Peter King and Joe Liberman do not offend us with their opportunistic grand standing. Please tell me, we don’t accept the near miss of loss of human life on Christmas Day, as we swallowed the politicizing of 9/11, with jet deck landing and “Mission Accomplished” pontification. Surely, we have seen the light by now and know it’s time to think reasonably, act responsibly and work together. Right Conservatives are wrong: It is not weak for an American President to “review the situation” before plowing us under by blundering blindly forward. However, even if the GOP was correct, it is morally wrong to use human life and any threat to it or near catastrophe as a political means to fire up a frustrated base of support. Now whether you read the Bible, newspapers or tea leaves – think. Reconsider how every Congress & President from 1900 to 2008, regardless of Party, have led to a Nation that praises and believes in the secrets and lies of oil men in our White House, but also led to a President who is willing to accept responsibility, admit mistakes and even hold accountable those in government who failed to protect us. Can you even imagine GW, Cheney, Peter King, Rush Limbaugh, Michael Steele, Sarah Palin speaking so maturely and acting so responsibly?
